Several residents of Cortalim especially Sancoale expressed their angered after the PWD (Water Supply department) undertook shoddy patch work of a stretch of road along the busy NH17A highway near Sancoale Shantadurga Temple barely 200 mts from the Cortalim circle.
Residents have said that the works undertaken by the PWD are shoddy and the levels of the patched up surfaces are uneven converting the busy highway into a death trap.
Stating that cement was used to patch up the roads, and that several accidents have been reported at the location on a daily basis after the patching up works were undertaken by the PWD, residents demanded that the PWD immediately take up restoration works on the road and get the roads leveled on top priority.
Sources informed that the PWD had taken up some work and carried out excavation of the busy highway some days back.
However, looking at the heavy flow of traffic along the highway, they hurriedly did some patch up so as to clear the road for traffic. Unfortunately, they messed up the even surface of the busy highway.
Speaking to the media, a resident Ramdas Naik said that the PWD was responsible for the accidents at the site.
“There is full flow of traffic all day long on this road. The PWD has messed up the area and now many vehicles swerve to avoid this patch. There was an accident recently and there are chances that there may be more accidents due to such shoddy works of the PWD. The road must be patched up evenly and this work by PWD is totally unprofessional and unsafe for motorists,” said Naik.
Another resident Manuel Fernandes said that PWD officials must be taken to task for the poor works taken up by them along the highway.
“The PWD is just not bothered about the lives of the people. They have made this area into a death trap. The lives of so many people are at risk due to such shoddy works. The PWD must immediately take up damage control and re-patch up the area ensuring that the works are at the same level as that of the road. The patch up job is so uneven that it has a depression at one place and an elevated surface at the other end. The PWD must act before it is too late and more accidents are reported at the site,” said Fernandes.
