Replying to a question, the Sarpanch said that the contractor will initially collect the waste from the wards once a week, adding ‘depending upon the success of the programme, we will see whether the drive can be carried out thrice a week."
At Cavelossim, considered the hub of starred resorts, a regular monthly garbage (plastic) collection drive was carried out by Cavelossim panchayat along with other institutions from the village on Sunday.
Newly-elected Sarpanch Dionisio Dias along with panch members kicked off the day-long exercise at 10 am before culminating the drive in the evening. Desmond Dias (panch), Francis Rodrigues, Viriato Mendes and Serafino Cotta participated in the collection drive.
The waste collection drive had figured prominently at the Cavelossim gram sabha wherein members had called for sustained efforts to tackle the menace. Sarpanch Dionisio told The Goan that the panchayat would streamline the waste collection system in the village and would also install CCTV cameras at designated places to keep the miscreants dumping waste along the roadsides at bay.
