The power outage that occurred at about 11.30 pm on Wednesday in some parts of Vasco was restored at about 10 am on Thursday, while other areas that faced low voltage was restored at about 11.30 am.
The Ashoka tree that fell near Vasco police quarters damaged three electricity poles, besides the cables.
Though power supply was restored at 11.30 am, the electricity department officials were seen working till late Thursday evening to erect new poles.
Speaking to The Goan, Milton Fernandes from Baina said the maintenance work carried out by the electricity department was a farce.
“The electricity department used to shut down power supply from morning to evening to carry out maintenance work during certain days in April and May, which looked like a farce,” said
Fernandes.
Another resident from Vasco, Mahesh Goankar said the electricity department collects their bills on time, but fail to deliver continuous power supply, especially during monsoon.
While Romeo D’Souza from Baina said most of the insulators are old which develop cracks, due to which the insulators burst during monsoon, affecting power supply.
D’Souza further said the electricity department should have changed the insulators during pre-monsoon work, as it would have avoided such power disruptions in the city.
When contacted, executive engineer of electricity department, Vasco, Sivsankaran K said the power supply in Vasco was disrupted after a tree uprooted near the Vasco police quarters, damaging three electricity poles.
EE Sivsankaran admitted that the insulators are old, but said the damage could be witnessed only during
monsoon.
“The insulators develop a fine crack or a minute hole which cannot be traced with a naked eye and during monsoon as the rainwater enters in the damaged insulators, it burst and the power supply is disturbed,” said EE
Sivsankaran.
Sivsankaran added that power disruption at Mangor and Baina was due to some problem in the feeder which was rectified.
