The Southwest monsoon has set over Kerala on Thursday morning which is late by two days. Monsoon arrives in Goa normally after 4-5 days after onset in Kerala, which means Goa is likely to miss the normal date of June 5 for monsoon arrival.
“Southwest monsoon has advanced into some parts of South Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area, South Kerala, South Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of Comorin “ Maldives area and some more parts of southwest Bay of Bengal today, the 3rd June 2021,” said an IMD release.
The arrival of monsoon over Goa is less likely to occur before June 5. With present observations, the wind patterns for monsoon may take around four days to set over the latitudes of Goa. And the rainfall activity also needs to be picked up. In case the rain or wind conditions aren't meeting the criteria, then the date of arrival over Goa may further prolong for 2-3 more days.
Earlier there was a prediction that there may be lightning and heavy rain in some parts of both the districts in Goa in the next two days. With a circulation over East central Arabian Sea off Karnataka coast up to 3.1 km height and a trough at mean sea level off Karnataka-Kerala coasts, rain/thundershower activity continues over Goa. Lightning and heavy rain at isolated places over both districts in Goa, are very likely up to June 5, said the IMD prediction.
As per the satellite pictures, thick clouds were seen over the Kerala coast and South east Arabian Sea, which predicted that the monsoon will be reaching Kerala two days late.
