Salvador do Mundo Sarpanch Sandeep Salgaonkar has stopped road construction work in Ward 2 near Vijaynagar in the village, after claiming that over 200 trees had been felled at the site.
Salgaonkar was speaking to reporters after he carried out an inspection of the area along with officers of the forest department.
“Taking advantage of the curfew and the Covid pandemic, the builder has illegally constructed the road by felling over 200 trees. When villagers brought this incident to my notice, I rushed to the site and stopped the construction and reported the matter to the forest department,” said Salgaonkar.
The sarpanch said a forest department officer Zilu Gawas visited the site and inspected the work.
“Gawas said the forest department has not given permission to anybody to cut trees and construct the road. The panchayat has written to the town and country planning department, Porvorim Police station, deputy collector, Range Forest Officer and the PWD (Roads) assistant engineer requesting them to look into the matter and take necessary action.”
“After massive cutting of trees in Socorro and construction of multi-storied buildings, builders have now shifted their attention to Salvador do Mundo. The panchayat will not allow cutting of trees in the village and we will strive to maintain the beauty of the village,” said Salgaonkar.
