State witnesses a high in divorce registrations

PANAJI

The rate of divorce and immediate divorce after marriage is on a high in the State. 

In the last 17 months, 423 divorces have been registered. Therefore, on an average per month 25 couples are separating. 

There is no special family court in the state hence such divorce matters are being before the lower court.

Due to this high divorce rate, the government has mooted compulsory counselling before the second signature of the marriage registration.   


A jump during lockdown

Statistics show that the number of couples seeking divorce has increased during the lockdown. In January 2020, 43 divorces, February 29, March 25, April 7, May 12, June 16, July 27, August 19, September 29, October 32, November 34 and December 42 divorces were registered. In January 2021 24, February 32, March 27, April 24, May 2 divorces have been registered.

Salcete taluka has registered the most divorces in 2020-21. From January 2020 to May 2021, 121 divorces have been registered in Salcete taluka. The rural areas have a lower divorce rate as compared to urban areas.
