The repair of breaches in the Noikhazan bundh at Muddi-Sao Mathias has been taken up on war footing, with a 5-metre breach already repaired and work on another 10-metre breach taken up.
The Noikhazan bundh provides protection from the river water to areas like Muddi, where recently flooding of fields and roads was witnessed as saline water entered inland due to the breaches of bundhs and overflowing of the Mandovi river water.
It may be recalled that ‘The Goan’ had highlighted how the Muddi area in Sao Mathias-Divar remained cut off from the rest of the village as the only road leading to the ward remained flooded for over five days.
Speaking to The Goan, Sao Mathias sarpanch Sadanand Phadte informed that on Tuesday, a 5-metre breach was repaired and work had begun on another 10-metre breach, which is likely to be completed in another four days. “I am personally monitoring the repair work of the breaches along with members of the Noikhazan tenants association and once the other 10-metre breach is completed, river water will be stopped from entering inland and it will provide relief to Muddi and surrounding areas.”
Meanwhile, the work on the Naroa bundh has still not started. The breaches in this bundh has affected Vanjua and Bakro vaddo in Sao Mathias with both the areas remaining cut off due to flooding of roads leading to this areas. However, sources informed ‘The Goan’ that a team of the soil conservation department will be visiting Sao Mathias on Wednesday and inspect the Naroa bundh to prepare the estimates for repairs. “Once the estimates are done, then the repairs of the bundh will be taken up,” a source said.
