For the last few years, water logging in Panaji has become a common feature in the monsoon season. Even this year, water logging has disrupted the normal course of life of a lot of people several times.
The Indian Plumbing Association (IPA) Goa chapter has said that storm water drainage should be upgraded to prevent water-logging in Panaji. Ashok
Joshi, chairman, IPA-Goa, said, “There is hardly any soil in Panaji to absorb rain-water. With more and more construction, run of flow increases. In rains, water falls on roofs first, from roofs it goes to pavers and roads and from there to gutters. The gutters should re designed in a manner that they allow smooth flow of water in rains.”
“This is extremely important given that Panaji is getting more and more concretised every year. As a result, there is little ground left to absorb the rain-water. In such a case, only a well designed drainage system can prevent water-logging.”
Joshi further added that people should also be careful to ensure that the drainage system of the city works effectively. If plastic is thrown carelessly around the city, it is bound to block the drains, which results in water-logging in monsoons. But he emphasized that storm water drainage in Panaji can be engineered in a manner that there is no water-logging in the city.
