Lamenting that morals have been forgotten in today’s society, former Chief Justice of the Allahabad HC, Justice Ferdino Rebello on Wednesday said there was a time when there was some meaning to politics, but times have now changed.

Justice Rebello said he is ashamed to mention in his CV that he is an ex-MLA, and hoped that students do not fall into these temptations, but rise to be proud Indians by maintaining moral standards and integrity.

“The chairman of Cuncolim Educational Society Dilip Desai asked me why I do not include in my CV that I was an ex-Cuncolim MLA. Frankly, I was ashamed to put that in my CV. Mahatma Gandhi had given us the voice of morality. There was a time when there was some meaning to politics. There was a time when good men were in politics, but times have changed,” Justice Rebello said, while addressing the Founders Day gathering of CES on Wednesday.

Saying that students must be in a position to rebel as they have to think and speak for themselves, Justuce Rebello said rebellion is the foundation of youth and no society will move if students do not revolt against the prevailing situation.

“New ideas come of revolt. Great societies evolved because their youth challenged what was said by someone before them,” he said.

Paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, Justice Rebello said that Gandhi Jayanti reminds people of the simple life of a great man, who was able to take the country forward into a new nation. “I do not know how many of the students have read the Mahatma’s writings. He was the voice of morality,” he added.
