Recommended names receive approval from South Congress

MARGAO

As the Congress leadership adopted a “no addition, no deletion” norm for the district level committees, all the names of candidates recommended by the Block Congress Committee from South Goa received the stamp of approval from the South district Congress committee on Monday.

Sanguem constituency tops the list, with as many as 14 candidates vying for the party ticket. Not to antagonize any candidate or faction of the party, the district committee has forwarded the list to the next level of scrutiny.

Amongst the list of candidates recommended by the district committee to the PEC includes Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat, party working presidents Alexio Sequeira and Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco, former MLAs Avertano Furtado, Mickky Pacheco and Benjamin D’Silva.

The names of candidates, which were discussed and deliberated at the district Congress committee on Monday, have now been forwarded to the Pradesh Election Committee, sources said.

Sources pointed out that Congress had put in place a system wherein the district committee was not empowered to add names or delete the names of candidates recommended by the Block Committees.

The district committee, however, was empowered to discuss and deliberate on the names of the candidates. The exercise, however, passed off without any major issue, barring initial questioning by a district Committee member on the procedure adopted to recommend names of candidates by the district Committee.

Party verifying if Chetan Desai is a member

MARGAO: The Congress leadership is believed to have told the South Goa district Committee members that the party is verifying whether Chetan Desai has been a member of the Congress party or not.

The issue over the membership of Chetan Desai had cropped up after the Canacona Block Congress chief had announced that the block had recommended the names of only two candidates.

When the matter came up before the district committee, a senior functionary pointed out that the party is in the process of verifying whether Chetan Desai is a member of Congress or not.

No call on list of Dabolim, Fatorda, Vasco

MARGAO: While the Congress has recommended the names of party candidates for 18 constituencies to the Pradesh Election Committee, the party is yet to take a call on whether to recommend names of candidates of the Fatorda, Vasco and Dabolim blocks.

Recommendation of names of candidates is yet to take place in Fatorda, Vasco and Dabolim block, throwing up questions whether Congress has postponed the meetings to accommodate like-minded political parties in the scheme of things.
