Over the last months, Congress in Goa has gone through a massive disintegration, exposing a severe leadership crisis within the ranks of the party. In yet another blow to the party, on December 20, one of their top-performing legislators of the Goa Legislative Assembly, sitting MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco tendered his resignation and later joined the TMC.
In a press release, TMC stated that the three-time Congress legislator Reginaldo is a political figure of immense repute, being one of the 11 MLAs to have attended all 80 sittings of the legislative assembly held over the past five years. In a survey that analysed the performance of Goa’s 40 legislators across the last four and a half years, it was also found that he tabled a total of 1,202 questions, making him a top ‘performer’ among Goa’s 40 MLAs.
The TMC further stated that Reginaldo has served the people of Salcete for nearly two decades now. Besides being a politico-par-excellence, he is known for the several titles and achievements he has accrued over his years of service to the people. In 2006, he led Goa Bachao Abhiyan, a people-led protest, which publicly denounced the Goa Regional Plan 2011 and brought up several sensitive issues.
The TMC stated that in his political career, Reginaldo has made several strides and is a three-time MLA from Curtorim. Alongside, he is member of several significant committees of the Goa Legislative Assembly, including the Estimates Committee, the Committee on Petitions, as well as the Select Committee on The Goa Succession, Special Notaries and Inventory, among others.
Throughout his political journey, he is known among the people for being an accessible leader, with a heart of gold. On various occasions, Aleixo Reginaldo has gone out of his way to ease the plight of local farmers by providing them with harvesting machines, seeds and other equipment, the TMC said.
In the past, he has actively protested against the proposed double-tracking of the railway track through Cansaulim and has supported several people-led movements including Mollem. Among locals, he is known for his lofty political ideals that have always put the interests of the people ahead of party politics, the TMC stated.
