About 40 residents from Bonkolwada ward at Kazur-Cavrem in Sanguem face significant danger to their lives while crossing a makeshift wooden bridge over a rivulet which is in spate on account of heavy rains in the area.
According to sources, the residents from 7-8 households in this remote area have been forced to construct a 20-metre makeshift wooden bridge over the river annually to maintain connectivity with the other parts of the village.
This temporary solution raises serious safety concerns, particularly for children who must cross it daily to attend school.
“Despite years of persistent appeals to the government for a permanent structure, their pleas have gone unanswered,” said the source.
“Even a simple proposal of laying concrete pipes with a slab across the river, which would adequately address their immediate needs, has not been implemented. Left with no option, lives are endangered when villagers, especially young children, have to walk over the wooden makeshift bridge over the river which flows with force during monsoon months.”
