Residents, along with Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas and Benaulim Sarpanch Xavier Pereira, have questioned whether traffic signals can function efficiently at a junction characterised by narrow approach roads, a notified bus stop, a chapel, and a rickshaw stand located in close proximity.
The concerns were raised during an inspection of the Maria Hall junction on Tuesday. The inspection was attended by MLA Venzy Viegas, Sarpanch Xavier Pereira, senior officials from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) led by Nixon Soares, Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prabhudesai, traffic police officials, and local residents.
During the inspection, Viegas highlighted the challenges posed by the existing bus stop situated right at the junction. He pointed out that buses halting at the stop could disrupt traffic flow and undermine the purpose of the proposed signal system. The MLA also noted that the narrow roads converging at the junction could further complicate traffic management once signals become operational.
Suggesting a cautious approach, Viegas urged the Traffic and Transport authorities not to activate the traffic signals immediately. However, he said the authorities could proceed with operating the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based cameras installed at the junction for monitoring and enforcement purposes.
Local residents echoed similar concerns, questioning whether the proposed arrangement would ease congestion or create additional bottlenecks in the area.
Responding to the issues raised, SP Rajendra Prabhudesai assured those present that all concerns and suggestions put forward by the MLA and local citizens would be conveyed to the higher authorities for further discussion and appropriate action before any final decision is taken on the operation of the traffic signals.
