In a bid to resolve regular flooding and water-logging, Cortalim MLA Anton Vas on Monday morning launched the work on a box culvert and drainage along the road, near Vailankanni Chapel at Pajentar-Cortalim.

The works were launched in the presence of ZP member Merciana Vas, Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira, Dy Sarpanch Divya Raikar, PWD officials and other panch members of Cortalim Panchayat.

Speaking to reporters, Vas said the works, which have been taken up at a cost of Rs 35 lakh, would be completed in two months.

"Residents in the area faced floods during every monsoons for several years. People in Sontrant-Pajentar faced a lot of hardships due to water-logging and flooding, as water would flow knee-deep at the Vailankanni Chapel, causing hardships to devotees. 

"The project comprises construction of a 14-mtr box culvert, construction of retaining wall and drain for around 50 mtrs," said Vas.

"The project was sanctioned by the PWD minister Nilesh Cabral and works have begun today. I appeal to people to bear with us while the work is being taken up," said Vas.

Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira and Dy Sarpanch Divya Raikar also spoke on the occasion.
