The North Goa District Magistrate has prohibited all road digging and cutting in and around Old Goa ahead of the decennial exposition of the relics of St Francis Xavier. This ban, effective immediately and lasting until 5th January 2025, aims to prevent disruptions as large crowds are expected during the event.
The decision follows unauthorised roadworks, including digging and pipe-laying near Gaundalim and other areas around Old Goa. These activities have caused significant inconvenience to commuters, particularly with ongoing Smart City projects already disrupting traffic.
“The decennial exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier, scheduled from 21st November 2024 to 5th January 2025 at the Se Cathedral Church and Basilica of Bom Jesus, will attract devotees, religious leaders, VIPs, and diplomats. It is essential to maintain smooth access,” stated the order issued by District Magistrate Sneha Gitte.
Violations of the ban will attract penalties under Section 21 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023.
