A meeting of the South Goa District Road Safety Council on Tuesday decided to seek funds under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to fund signages along the roads after the traffic cops maintained that they cannot challan motor vehicle violations for want of signboards.
The meeting also discussed the issue of optimization of public transport to attract people to use public transport. The PWD also assured the Council that the department will remove all potholes from the roads by November 30.
At the Council chaired by Additional District Collector Prasanna Acharya, a host of issues concerning road safety came up for discussion.
On the absence of traffic signboards, the traffic police told the participants that cops are handicapped to take action against traffic violators for want of signboards.
In fact, the officer contended that the problem of absence of signboards is felt more in the cities than in the villages.
The Additional Collector later told the media that the authorities will approach the Zuari bridge contractor for installation of traffic signboards along the Verna-Cortalim stretch under the Corporate Social Responsibility scheme.
When asked to shed light on the demand for optimization of public transport in the state, the Additional Collector maintained that the issue needs to be addressed at a higher level given that funds are needed for the purpose.
As far as the potholed roads are concerned, a representative of the PWD assured the council that the exercise is underway to remove all the potholes by November-end.
The issue over the present ownership of the Margao flyover also came up for discussion when representative of GOACAN Lorna Fernandes said though the Konkan railway has claimed that the flyover has been handed over to the PWD, there’s no agreement on record to prove the claim.
In this connection, it has been decided to call the representatives of the KRC and the PWD in order to resolve the issue of flyover ownership.
