The tiatr fraternity was left in shock after Marcelino Noronha (68) of Chicalim and popularly known as Marcelino De Betim in tiatr, was killed in a road mishap near the vegetable market on Tuesday evening.

This is the fifth fatal road mishap reported in Mormugao Taluka since November and the fourth fatal accident in a week.

According to information, the mishap took place as Noronha, a senior tiatrist and was a popular singer and comedian, had gone to the vegetable market on his bike (GA-06-C-3300) to buy flowers for the church to mark the first death anniversary mass of his wife on Wednesday.

Noronha ran a small tavern in the chicken market area, sources told The Goan.

Eyewitnesses said Noronha was about to leave from the vegetable market, when a truck (GA-09-U-3561), which was leaving from the port knocked him down.

“Though Noronha was wearing a helmet, he came under the rear wheels of the loaded truck and was killed on the spot. The truck driver ran away from the site but was later taken to the Vasco police station,” said the source.

Sources also said Noronha was to perform songs as a part of the Church musical programme staged by the parish youth on Thursday and was usually seen practicing his music and attending band practice in the St Andrew’s church for the programme in the last few days.

Vasco police has also registered a case and is investigating the matter.

It may be recalled that a 6-year-old girl, Geeta Chandrappa Oli, was killed in a fatal accident at Dabolim on November 6, when a car collided with the bike driven by the uncle of the deceased girl, while she and her mother were the pillion riders.

Later, two youth were killed in a fatal accident near the government school at Pirni when their bike was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle on November 13.

On the same day, a 30-year-old man from Upasnagar-Sancoale was killed while crossing the highway after being knocked down by a speeding car.
