The next time motorists as well as consumers do not get relief from the traffic and transport agencies, including the RTO, they can knock the doors of the respective Civil Supplies inspectors under the Consumer Protection Act.
The sub-committee of the South Goa Road Safety and Traffic Management of South Goa District Consumer Protection Council, which met at the district police headquarters on Monday, has underscored the need to strengthen the grievances redressal mechanism to provide relief to the consumers hit by the inaction of the authorities.
After the meeting, which was attended by the RTO and Traffic officials and members of the consumer forums, activist Roland Martins told the media that the Taluka Civil Supplies Inspector is the grievances solution officer under the Consumer Protection Act and citizens should approach the inspector for resolution of their grievances.
“I understand that consumers do not get justice and their grievances remain unattended for days and months together. The sub-committee of the South Goa Road Safety and Traffic Management of South Goa District Consumer Protection Council has decided to launch awareness campaigns to educate consumers of the alternate grievances forums,” he said.
The sub-committee meeting has also took note of GOACAN’s “Back to Basics: Safe Buses, Safe Bus Stands for Goa” an advocacy initiative on bus transport, which was launched on Monday.
Roland pointed out that the initiative has been launched keeping in mind the constitution of the State Task Force on mobility of the Goa government on the recommendations of NITI Aayog, New Delhi.
“With the Centre and State governments laying stress on mobility and e-transport, awareness amongst the stakeholders is of utmost importance on all issues given that plans are afoot to introduce e-buses to be run on bio-fuel, electricity, solar energy etc. We have to find out whether our bus stands will have the facilities for the buses to re-charge fuel and power,” he added. “The initiative will also highlight the need for last mile connectivity when preparing the transport component of the Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP) and the Strategy Document on Mobility for Smart Towns & Cities of Goa by gathering the viewpoints of pedestrians, cyclists and two & four-wheeler vehicle users,” he added.
