The North Goa District Road Safety Committee has decided to step up enforcement against underage driving and launch awareness campaigns against drunk driving as part of its ongoing road-safety push in the district.
The measures were discussed at a meeting chaired by Deputy Collector and DRO, North Goa, Pratik Porob, where it was decided that the Directorate of Transport and Traffic Police would jointly conduct awareness-cum-enforcement drives against underage driving.
The committee also discussed observing State Road Safety Week from September 28 to October 4 through all its members. An awareness campaign against drunken driving will be conducted with assistance from the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
The committee further called for the removal of stray cattle from national highways, State highways and major district roads, besides proper documentation of vehicle-animal accident cases with assistance from the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.
Vehicle-related sound and exhaust pollution will also be monitored with assistance from the Goa State Pollution Control Board.
The Public Works Department (National Highways) will install, as notified by the District Collector, “No Parking” signage on approach roads to the GMC, whereas the Department of Tourism will install “Don’t Drive on Beaches” signage to prevent vehicles from being driven onto beaches.
