The political landscape of Sancoale witnessed a significant development on Tuesday evening as former Cortalim Zilla Panchayat member and former Trinamool Congress (TMC) Goa State convenor Mariano Rodrigues formally returned to the Congress party.
The induction programme took place in the presence of senior state and national leaders, drawing hundreds of supporters that underscored his continued influence in the constituency.
Rodrigues was inducted into the Congress in the presence of AICC Goa in-charge Manikrao Thakre, AICC Secretary Dr Anjali Nimbalkar, Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao, GPCC President Girish Chodankar and other senior Congress leaders, who welcomed him back into the party fold.
Political observers believe Rodrigues' return could significantly alter the political equations in the Cortalim Assembly constituency, particularly in Sancoale, where he enjoys considerable grassroots support.
A seasoned political figure with deep roots in the village, Rodrigues has built a strong organisational network over the years, while his family's active role in local politics, including that of his brother, a panch member, has further strengthened his influence.
His performance in the recent Zilla Panchayat elections is widely seen as one of the key factors behind his return to the Congress.
Contesting as an Independent candidate, Rodrigues emerged as the runner-up after a closely fought contest, losing to the BJP candidate by a narrow margin while comfortably finishing ahead of the Congress nominee.
Political sources said the electoral performance brought Rodrigues back into the Congress leadership's focus, with the party making sustained efforts to persuade him to return in a bid to strengthen its prospects in the constituency ahead of future elections.
Addressing the gathering, senior Congress leaders expressed confidence that Rodrigues' homecoming would further energise the party organisation in South Goa and help consolidate grassroots support.
