The Bicholim Traffic Cell has collected Rs 29.78 lakh in fines after booking 7,041 motorists for various offences in Sattari and Bicholim talukas during last year.

According to Traffic Cell Police Inspector Chandrakant Gawas, the offences and fines included 937 cases of over-speeding (Rs 6.39 lakh in fines), 149 cases of unsafe driving (Rs 60,000), 143 cases of driving under influence of alcohol.

Besides, 344 motorists were fined for riding without helmets, 178 were booked for parking in ‘No-Parking’ zones, and 720 were penalised for dangerous parking.

“Action becomes unavoidable when rules are violated. Therefore, everyone must follow the law and avoid breaking traffic rules. Violations not only harm the offender but can have serious consequences for others as well. We appeal to citizens to be cautious so that accidents can be controlled and others do not suffer due to negligence of motorists,” said PI Gawas.

PI Gawas also said awareness campaigns regarding traffic rule violations and the adverse effects of drunken driving were conducted in various schools across Sattari and Bicholim talukas.

The department conducted such programmes at 153 locations and provided training and awareness to about 8,882 people. This included 5,676 students, 294 Home Guards, 591 workers and 242 prominent citizens who received special training.

Under the Road Safety Programme, various project-based programmes were conducted at 27 locations.

Besides, 23 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2025, which is lower than 34 lives lost in 2024.

According to rouses, the Traffic Cell continues to face a shortage of personnel.

As per the government’s new policy, only inspectors and sub-inspectors have the authority to impose fines. However, the Traffic Cell has not been provided with even a single sub-inspector so far.
