Minister of Industries Trade and Commerce Mauvin Godinho has said emphasised the importance of safety at the grassroots and developing it into a culture, so that everyone feels a bounden duty to protect people.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the 2nd Edition of CII Goa Conference on Industrial Safety, Godinho addressed various measures which need to be adopted by the industry to develop safety right at the grassroots level and bring in a change in mindset within the organisations.

“The government on its part is trying to simplify measures and processes to benefit the industry, and development of Occupational Safety and Health would be of paramount importance going ahead so that it benefits all the citizens.”

"Safety impacts society, everyone. Sometimes, we wait for events to happen to change our thinking. In this country, the Union Carbide incident set the trend on the importance of safety, and planning,” said the minister.

Stating that safety and a good environment in industries will affect the output, Godinho said industries should ensure hygiene in toilets and canteens

“A clean environment will impact the working output of employees,” said Godinho.

CII Goa State Council Chairperson Swati Salgaocar said awareness needs to be spread about occupational safety and health among stakeholders.

“That’s where CII as the apex industry body created a platform to expose the industry personnel to better understand the trends and technologies available,” said Salgaocar.

Mahendra Wani, Location Head, Goa Region, Siemens Limited and convenor, CII Goa Manufacturing Excellence Panel, said the objective of the conference was to attempt to transform the Health & Safety Culture in organisations to ensure business sustainability.

Mahesh Chandak, Head of HSE-South Asia, Bayer Group, said global warming is enhancing the organisation’s focus on ESG and sustainability.

“This requires organisations to further enhance their Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) management system in areas of risk mitigation, leadership commitment and employee engagement so that it can support our journey to meet the Sustainable Development Goals,” he said.

Prominent speakers from various sectors of the industry shared the latest trends, technologies and best practices on health and safety followed by world-class companies.

The conference was attended by over 200 participants from the industry. Various companies participated in showcasing their products and services at the exhibition space at the conference.
