MARGAO
The Mhadei river issue figured prominently at the gram sabhas of the panchayats of Salcete on Sunday.
Guirdolim
The Guirdolim gram sabha chaired by acting sarpanch Joao Piexote adopted a unanimous resolution demanding that the Centre immediately revoke the DPR issued to the Karnataka government to erect bhandaras at the Kalasa and Bhadura projects for the diversion of Mhadei river water.
The gram sabha members told the acting sarpanch that the panchayat must write a letter to the Central government to this effect, demanding immediate withdrawal of the DPR given to Karnataka.
Paroda
The issue also echoed at the gram sabha of the Paroda panchayat chaired by sarpanch Deepak Kharangate. Gram sabha members in one voice demanded the immediate withdrawal of the DPR and stop all plans to divert the Mhadei river waters to neighbouring Karnataka.
Sarpanch Kharangate informed that the panchayat would send the resolution adopted at Sunday’s meeting to the Goa government as well as the Union government with a plea to withdraw the DRP granted to Karnataka.
Betalbatim
Betalbatim sarpanch Anthony Fernandes said the Mhadei issue also figured at the gram sabha of the panchayat held on Sunday. He said the panchayat had at the last body meeting adopted a resolution opposing plans to divert the Mhadei river waters and to withdraw the DPR.
He said the panchayat would send the resolutions to the government demanding the withdrawal of the DPR and to ensure that Mhadei river waters are not diverted to the neighbouring state.
The gram sabhas across Salcete have adopted resolutions since the last two Sundays demanding immediate withdrawal of the DPR issued to Karnataka. They have also called for the protection of Mhadei river waters from being diverted to the neighbouring state.
