The Salcete Truck Owners Association on Thursday took strong exception to the decision of the Chandor panchayat to stop mining trucks, warning that the truck owners will be forced to stop all trucks from plying in the village.
Addressing the media, Association President Franky Gomes questioned the rationale of the Chandor village panchayat to selectively target trucks transporting coal and black metal, while turning a blind eye to trucks transporting laterite stones and sand. “We strongly condemn the action of the Chandor village panchayat in stopping only trucks carrying coal and black metal from plying in the village. If the panchayat has initiated the action as per the notification, the panchayat body should take uniform action against all heavy vehicles involved in transporting material,” he said.
Franky even warned the panchayat that the truck owners may be forced to expose the illegal activities going in Chandor village if the panchayat does not immediately stop targetting the trucks transporting coal and metal.
“How can the panchayat allow trucks transporting laterite stones and sand if the notification bans all forms of transportation. The panchayat should either allow all forms of transportation or stop all heavy vehicles from plying in the village,” he demanded.
Franky, however, pointed out that the Truck Owners Association will fully support the panchayat body if it tries to regulate movement of heavy traffic in the village during peak school hours in the morning and afternoon.
