SANGUEM
With brakes being applied on sand mining in the State following directives from the High Court, canoes used in sand mining in the Zuari and Kushawati rivers are being dismantled and reportedly sold as scrap.
With sand mining activities having stopped for last several months, traditional sand miners who were active in Curchorem and Sanvordem areas are now left jobless and are staring at a bleak future with no jobs at hand.
All these years, the youth who basically hailed from Curchorem and Sanvordem areas were totally dependent on sand mining and had made sand mining as their livelihood.
The affected youth had been waiting anxiously for some time for the sand mining business to restart in the State.
But with no solution in their favour and with their canoes getting corroded, the youth have now begun to sell their canoes as scrap.
Work to dismantle the canoes used in sand mining has been going on in full swing at Sanvordem.
