Ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, the Lohia Maidan, Margao on Sunday played host to the annual Matoli Bazaar making available under one roof all the traditional fruits, wild produce and flowers prominently used to decorate 'Matoli'.
Organised by Atal Gram Development Agency annually since the last 10 years, attracting positive response for the traditional and organic products made available by farmers and womenfolk of Netravali and parts of Sanguem taluka, the bazaar was inaugurated on Sunday at the hands of Social Welfare Minister, Subhash Phal Dessai in the presence of Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuemkar and others.
In his address, the Minister said the Matoli Bazar is providing the requisite platform to women from remote villages to learn marketing skills and simultaneously mobilise the rural economy.
“Since 10 years, local farmers and traditional vendors from Netravali are participating in the Matoli Bazaar at Margao and exhibiting their natural produce for Matoli decoration. The concept of Matoli Bazaars is now getting replicated all around the state," he added.
The Margao MLA lauded the efforts of Atal Gram Development Agency for organising the bazaar providing the required opportunities to local vendors to showcase their traditional produce.
Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar informed that the Matoli Bazaar facilitates people in and around Margao by making available different varieties of traditional and wild produce under one roof.
Former MLA Damodar Naik, Vice Chairman, Margao Municipal Council Dipali Sawal and others were present for the inaugural programe.
