Sanguem, Quepem get new Chairpersons and deputies

Newly elected chairperson and vice chairperson of Sanguem Municipal Council with ex-MLA Subhash Phaldessai.

As expected, Sweta Supraj Naik Tari was elected chairperson and Queiroz Cruz was elected vice chairperson of Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) on Monday, after they defeated Fouziya Shaikh and Messiah Saude Da Costa respectively by 6-4 votes.

At the elections conducted in the SMC office, Pritee Naik, Santiksha Gadkar, Archana Gaonkar, Queiroz Cruz, Sayyad Ikbal and Sweta Naik Tari voted in favour of the BJP-backed ruling group while Sangamweshwar Naik, Romualdo Fernandes, Messiah Saude Da Costa and Fouziya Shaikh voted for the opposition candidates.

The elections were conducted by Presiding Officer Pradip Naik and SMC chief officer Manoj Korgaonkar.

Later, former BJP MLA Subhash Phaldessai, who had been instrumental in getting the BJP-backed group to take control of the SMC, congratulated the newly elected chairperson and vice chairperson and assured the council of all support in the administrative development works in the council areas.

Phaldessai also appealed to opposition members to work united with the ruling group for the better development of Sanguem municipality.

Meanwhile, the BJP-led group of nine councillors in the 13-member Quepem Municipal Council (QMC) on Monday elected Suchita Shenvi Shirvoikar as the new chairperson of QMC, while another new face William Fernandes was elected vice chairperson.

At a special meeting, those voted in favour of the newly elected chairperson and vice chairperson were Deepali Naik, Ganpat Modak, Suchita Shirvoikar, Amol Kanekar, Chetan Haldankar, Prasad Phaldessai, Filu D Costa, Dayesh Naik and William Fernandes.

The ruling group at QMC is backed by Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar and speaking after the elections, Kavlekar congratulated the newly elected chairperson and vice chairperson.

Kavlekar appealed to all councillor to work for the development progress of Quepem town and assured the government’s support and cooperation to the newly elected council regarding development works.
