The Sanquelim Municipal council (SMC) will soon issue fines for traders dealing with single-use plastic and for customers demanding them.
Sanquelim Municipal council Chairperson Siddhi Prabhu said the punitive action will be taken after creating awareness for 21 days against single-use plastic in the market.
“This campaign is not only to keep Sanquelim clean and plastic-free, but also to safeguard residents from dreaded diseases like cancer,” said Prabhu, while addressing an awareness campaign in the market.
“During the next 21 days, we will create awareness on which single-use plastic will be banned. After the awareness drive is completed, the SMC will start punitive action.”
The awareness campaign was undertaken in association with Goa Waste Management Corporation, Goa Pollution Control Board, Mineral Foundation of Goa and a CSR initiative of Godrej company.
SMC Vice-Chairperson Anand Kanekar and other councillors, Shraddha Rangnekar, project coordinator of Mineral Foundation of Goa and other officials were also present during the awareness drive.
As part of the campaign, posters are being pasted on every shop in the market and shopkeepers are being urged to create awareness among people.
The SMC made it clear that not only are shopkeepers responsible for excessive use of plastic but those who ask for bags after purchasing goods are also responsible. Customers were encouraged to bring cloth bags to the market. Shraddha Rangnekar also provided information about the campaign.
