MARGAO
South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Monday demanded the BJP should stop harassment to the minorities, saying the ruling party has no right to hurt the sentiments of the minorities just because they are ruling at the Centre and in some states.
He also promised to raise in Parliament the atrocities on the minorities and the Hijab row that has snowballed in a major controversy in neighbouring Karnataka.
The MP also demanded that the Goa government initiate action against the illegal construction at the Old Goa heritage site, reminding the government that people agitating against the construction are still on a hunger strike.
Addressing the media, Sardinha recalled how the authorities in Karnataka had razed down the Christ The King statue in that State, saying this is only aimed at meting out harassment to the minorities.
“I am against any new structures, but no one has the right to desecrate any place of worship. Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Jains, Sikhs are all sons of the soil. In a democratic set-up, everyone has the right to follow his religion and no one has the right to do what others should do”, he added.
He added: “I would like to tell the BJP, just because you are ruling, don’t go against the sentiments of the people”.
