Sawant takes stock of cyclone relief work, Covid situation in Canacona

CANACONA
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has assured to provide a hearse van for Canacona taluka either from government funds or CSR funds.

Sawant was responding to Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes during his visit to Canacona to review the cyclone relief work and Covid situation in the taluka in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Babu Kavlekar, Dy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes, former MLAs Ramesh Tawadkar and Vijay Poi Khot and several government officials.

Emphasising the need for a hearse van dedicated to Canacona taluka, Fernandes informed the chief minister that no one was ready to bring the bodies of Covid patients and at times, even families are unwilling to bring the bodies of their near and dear ones who had succumbed to Covid.

In his response, Sawant said the demand was justified and agreed to make necessary provisions to transport bodies of Covid patients to Canacona.

“I will also provide a hearse van to Canacona either from government funds or CSR finance,” assured the chief minister.

Canacona Community Health Centre Health Officer Dr Jose Tavares informed the chief minister that on an average hundred antigen tests are conducted in Canacona while approximately 60 samples are collected for RT-PCR tests.

“There are presently 15 micro-containment zones notified, while 3 previously notified micro-containment zones have been de-notified. Also 18 Covid-19 patients are in hospitals, while 322 out of 340 active cases are under home isolation,” said Dr Tavares.

Responding to a shortage of nurses in Canacona, Sawant asked the health officer to obtain applications from local nurses willing to work in Canacona and to forward it to the director of health services for their appointments on contract basis.

“I will give the necessary sanction to this proposal,” said Sawant.

When informed that 28 persons had succumbed to Covid in Canacona taluka, the chief minister said 28 was too high a number for a place like Canacona taluka and sought the probable reasons for the many deaths in the taluka.

Medical Officer Dr Divakarji Velip then mentioned that most Covid deaths had taken place when people had not come to the hospital during the initial stages for tests and had reported to the hospital only after their situation had worsened.
