The Goa State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has acknowledged errors in the newly introduced Class VIII Konkani textbook chapter on national windsurfing champion Katya Coelho and said corrections will be carried out in the next edition of the book.
The chapter, introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) curriculum this academic year, came under criticism after Coelho pointed out factual inaccuracies and omissions in the lesson based on her achievements. Among the issues flagged were incorrect references to her sporting accomplishments and other factual mistakes.
The error came to light after it was found that the lesson incorrectly mentions Indian women's cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur instead of Indian men's hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh.
SCERT sources said the council had taken note of the feedback and that steps have been taken to make necessary corrections. Sources said that a new textbook with the corrections would be issued.
Katya Coelho, India's leading windsurfer and the country's only female sailor to compete at the 2014 Youth Olympics, is only the second Goan sportsperson after Brahmanand Shankhwalkar to have a dedicated chapter in a Konkani school textbook.
