School enrolment down by 3000 this year

Biggest drop in students between Stds 5-8 n Education Dept statistics puts Goa’s literacy rate at 88.7 per cent

The total number of students in Goa has dropped by more than 3,000 making it the sharpest drop the state has seen in the past decade.   
While the total number of students enrolled between Std I and Std X was 2,42,901 in the academic year 2014-15, this year 2015-16, the total number of students is only 2,39,884 a drop of 3,017, statistics released by the Education Department has revealed.   
In 2012-13 the total number of students enrolled in the State was 2,43,705, while in the following year it showed an increase rising to 2,44,782 before marginally dropping to 2,42,901 in the year 2014-15.   
The total number of students in the State has now returned to pre 2011-12 levels where the total number of students in the state ranged from 2.2 lakh to 2.35 lakh. The reasons for the spurt between 2012 and 2015 are yet to be made known.   
According to the statistics, the biggest drop is registered in students enrolment between Std V to VIII with there being 1347 less students in these classes across the state. This was followed by the number of students between VIII and X with there being 1086 students in these classes. The primary section has however seen a drop of only 584 students.   
The statistics have also revealed that the State has a literacy rate of 88.7% with male literacy at 92.64% and female literacy at 84.66%. The state also boasts of 1190 primary schools, 434 middle schools and 396 higher secondary schools with a teacher student ration of 1;25 at the primary level, 1:26 at the middle level and 1:23 at the secondary level.   
The average population served by each school at a primary level is 1215.74; 3024.91 for the middle level and 3464.50 for the secondary level. Whereas for the higher secondary level, each higher secondary school serves on an average a population of 15,543.45 people.
