With the aid of funds under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the XIVth Finance Commission, the MMC has embarked on a drive of collecting dry waste from school students, who, in turn, fetch the same from their residences and hand it over to their respective schools. The MMC later collects this waste from these respective schools every alternate day, bales it and dispatches it to Karnataka.

At an informal function held at Loyola High School, Margao, on January 20, MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Angle Prabhudessai said 11 schools are participating in this drive.

“We embarked on this drive on January 1 and will continue till February 8. A total of 2,000 students studying from Std V to Std X from these 11 schools are participating in this drive. We have managed to collect around 10,000 kgs of dry waste till date,” Dr Prabhudessai said.

Giving more details she said the waste brought by each child from these schools is weighed at these schools with the scales given to them. The waste is then stacked in a bag which is then weighed as the weight from that school. A special vehicle given by GSUDA to the MMC designated for this purpose then collects such waste every alternate day from these schools. About 300 kgs of waste is picked up every alternate day.

She said child fetching maximum dry waste from her residence will be entitled to a prize of Rs 5,000 while the child getting maximum waste among all 11 schools will bag Rs 8,000. The school collecting maximum waste will bag a trophy, Dr Prabhudessai informed.

Meanwhile, as a part of the drive to eradicate open defecation, the MMC has also decided to hold a Poster Competition in schools. “Three posters from each school will then be displayed in the city to create awareness about eradication of open defecation, in line with the central government's mission on this aspect,” Dr Prabhudessai told mediapersons.

Principal of Loyola High school, Fr Pedro Rodrigues, claimed consciousness about waste, particularly about segregation and environment, is created among the student community.

The citizens' representative at the MMC's Waste Management Cell, Orlando Pacheco was also present at the function.
