Aggrieved first-year law students on Monday withdrew their petition before the High Court after the Bar Council of India announced an increase in the number of first-year seats for the BA LLB programme and the University in turn decided to cancel the entrance examination it had scheduled for August 6 and instead follow the criteria for admission it has been following all these years.
In a communication sent to the Registrar of the Goa University, Secretary (Education) Prasad Lolayekar informed that the Bar Council approved a request from the Goa government to increase 30 seats for the first year BA LLB (20 seats in V M Salgaocar College of Law and 10 seats in G R Kare College of Law, Margao).
The State government had sent a request to increase the number of seats to resolve the admission issue.
According to the new plan, the Directorate of Higher Education with the help of both the law colleges will prepare a fresh merit list based on the criteria followed for all these years -- 50% weightage for 12th examination and 50% weightage for Goa Common Law Admission Test (G-CLAT).
Based on the fresh merit list, the Directorate of Higher Education will admit students those who have not got admission to date in both colleges without disturbing the admission of students who have already been admitted in the first year BA LLB class.
The University subsequently issued a notification cancelling the examination.
Earlier the Goa University had told the Court that its notification declaring the admission process for the BA LLB programme for the academic year 2023-24 as null and void and directing colleges to suspend classes for first-year students would “not be immediately implemented” and would instead be replaced by a fresh notification.
