Gram sabha demands action on scrapyard, garbage collection
MARGAO
Gram sabha members of Seraulim village panchayat on Sunday cautioned that the village will witness floods if the debris lying at the western bypass construction site is not cleared before the onset of monsoons.
At the Sunday gram sabha, member Kevin D’Souza raised the issue saying the debris will obstruct the free flow of flood water during the coming monsoons. He pointed out that mud dumped for the western bypass stilts is still blocking the natural flow of flood water. Despite repeated letters to the PWD, no action has been taken. This must be cleared before the monsoon, he demanded.
Water supply issue
The issue of erratic supply of drinking water also figured at the meeting. D’Souza pointed out that tap water is available only for limited hours and is unreliable. There are concerns about contamination. Each ward should plan a community well to ensure safe and dependable drinking water, he added.
Members also raised concern over the access to farmers in their agricultural fields. They demanded that all farmers must have proper access to their fields for cattle, tractors, and harvesters. The panchayat should protect and mark these access paths on site plans.
Scrapyard woes
On the scrapyard at Vodlem Tollem, gram sabha members pointed out that the scrapyard has become a centre for illegal activities, demanding that the MRF permissions granted earlier must be revoked immediately, and the area secured.
On garbage collection, members demanded that the panchayat should disclose the total number of households registered for garbage collection. A clear policy is needed to ensure 100 per cent collection and proper disposal.
On the perennial flooding of the railway underpass, members pointed out that the existing underpass floods every year with no permanent solution with a demand for road over bridge as a permanent solution.
