MARGAO
Seraulim villagers along with local MLA Venzy Viegas on Saturday morning descended at the Margao wholesale fish market road to highlight the issues of traffic congestion and snarls on the road because of vehicular parking on both sides of the wholesale fish market road.
The villagers pointed out that children from the village reach late in the city schools, adding that even ambulances are stuck up in the traffic congestion on the wholesale fish market road for want of traffic regulation.
During the inspection which was attended by Seraulim Sarpanch Seema Shanke, panchayat members and villagers, it was found out there’s parking on both sides of the road. Making matters worse for the road users is the illegal vending along the roadside right under the nose of the civic and police authorities. Fish vehicles, which enter and exit from the wholesale fish market, have added to the traffic snarls on the road.
After the inspection, Venzy told the media that given that the traffic police manpower is insufficient to handle the situation, the villagers have volunteered to assist the men-in-uniform by way of community policing. “From tomorrow, our volunteers will play the role of traffic wardens to help the traffic police to regulate traffic on the congested road,” he said.
The Benaulim MLA said since the Margao Municipal Council is required to play a key role in getting rid of the illegal vending on the wholesale fish market road, he would call on the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat to make the civic body to act on the matter.
Venzy said he would also talk to the Fatorda MLA on the matter since the Fatorda police is required to play its due role in regulating the situation. “If all the three MLAs come together along with the authorities, we will be able to evolve a situation to traffic jams and snarls on the Seraulim-Margao road at the wholesale fish market,” he said, adding that he has come to ensure that people of Seraulim village are not caught up in traffic jams for no fault of theirs.
