Referring to the recent rape case that occurred in Sirsaim, Umakant Kudnekar, a gram sabha member, said the incident has harmed the image of the village.
“In last 40 years I am living here and this is the first time that a rape incident has happened in the village. Incidentally, both the victim and the accused are not locals from the village,” Kudnekar said.
He said many boys were creating nuisance in the open space near the Mahalaxmi Temple at Bella Vista-vaddo, Sirsaim.
“These boys smoke and drink in the cover of darkness creating nuisance in the area,” he informed and wondered if police patrolling around the area would be of any help.
He said many locals have let their rooms on rent and this has had a disturbing effect on the demography of the village.
He requested the panchayat to hold a tenant verification exercise to get details of all those who stay on rent.
Other members of the gram sabha seconded him on the decision.
The gram sabha passed a resolution to conduct tenant verification within 15 days and to also collect necessary documents from the owners, who have given rooms on rent.
A gram sabha member complained that the person engaged for garbage collection had not visited her area for over 15 days. “The panchayat had started a good initiative to collect plastic waste in the village. But I have heard that the boy who collects garbage had not been paid adequately,” the member said.
“The boy was doing a good job and we need to be fair to him and pay him appropriately. He also needs to be encouraged by providing him with a cycle and other basic necessities,” the member added.
Panch member, Laxmikant Parab informed that some people behaved irresponsibly and that discouraged the garbage collector from doing his job. “I know a couple of people from my ward who mix wet and dry garbage and push it into the hands of the waste collector. Despite warning, these people continued with the same behavior. How much patience can a person have? We people need to act and behave responsibly,” Parab said.
Sarpanch, Gokuldas Kanolkar acknowledged the significance of the waste collector, as no one came forward to do the thankless job of lifting garbage.
“We will talk to the boy and if need be provide him the basic requirements for waste collection,” Kanolkar assured.
Besides Sarpanch Gokuldas Kanolkar and Deputy Sarpanch Maria D’Souza, two other panchas, secretary Keshave Phadte and BDO observer Vidhyadar Salgaonkar were present for the gram sabha.
