Vasco Sports Club proved too good for Santa Cruz Club, Cavelossim as they walked past ttheir rivals with a 2-1 win in the Goa Professional League (round 6) match at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa, Wednesday. At half time the score was locked at 1-1.
Santa Cruz Club, Cavelossim took the lead in the 9th minute when Floyd Fernandes netted home a deep cross sent to him by Mathew Colaco. In the 15th minute, Vasco made their first substitution by pulling out Macquin Dias and fielding in Shubham Dessai. They very next minute, Vasco’s Jeremy Menezes picked a yellow card for committing a foul on the rival custodian.
Melwin Fernandes made a perfect cross to Floyd who received the ball in the 21st minute but his shot sailed wide above the Vasco crossbar. In the 26th minute, Nasar made a well-timed cross to Kingslee Fernandes who hammered in the much awaited equaliser for his side.
In the 43rd minute, Vasco skipper Chinedu E Jiogu was yellow carded by referee Sunil Nanodkar for a reckless tackle on the rival custodian. Both the teams fought well till the lemon break, although the defence of Santa Cruz Club, Cavelossim was a bit fragile.
Cavelossim reshuffled their line-up by making a double substitution post resumption, replacing Mathew Colaco with Lavino Fernandes and simultaneously switching the goalscorer Floyd Fernandes with Clencio Pinto. In the 58th minute, Vasco made their second replacement for the day by substituting Jeremy with Meliston Pereira.
In the 60th minute, Cavelossim’s Rayman Fernandes crossed over the ball to Melwin whose bolstering shot on goal was well saved by Jerson Pereira, the rival goalkeeper. Ten minutes later the Nigerian, Chinedu took a perfect shot from a distance of 35 yards but it missed the rival crossbar by an inch and sailed out.
Cavelossim’s Mario Mascarenhas was shown the yellow card in the 86th minute for a reckless tackle on Meliston.Vasco’s Agnelo D’Souza tapped home the winner during the three minutes of injury time.
