South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) Chairman Mauvin Godinho has said the PDA mega retail market will witness a total transformation by March 2016 and the messy wholesale fish market within six months, even as he sought cooperation from people from all walks of life to make the market livable and walkable place.
“The plan to beautify the PDA retail market with the help of NGOs has shown encouraging results. Even the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar’s intervention has solved the water problem in the market. Vendors can directly apply to the PWD for connection. The PDA has also drawn estimate to the tune of Rs 1.38 crore to take up internal repair, paintings, illumination, drainage repairs etc. The proposal has gone to the government for administrative approve and financial sanction”, Mauvin told the media after an interaction with the NGOs helping the PDA to put the market in order.
He said the Phase I includes cleaning of the SGPDA market; beautification of the meat, fish, vegetable market; parking area and regularization of traffic flow and providing drinking water facility. Phase II includes installation of CCTV camera, security guards; beautification in front of Osia Commercial Complex and asphalting and laying of pavers in the parking area.
Mauvin said that phase III will involve zero waste market and generation of electricity from bio gas; internal cleaning and taking over unoccupied stalls from the allottees from the SGPDA market and thermoplastic pain marking of roads for parking and pick up parking for general public.
Briefing the media, Rajendra Talak, representing Clean Margao group, said that one can very well see fifty per cent change in the PDA retail market. “By April, the market will see a tremendous change, wherein people will just park their vehicles and come into the market for shopping in the evening. This will improve business and automatically improve road side vending”, Talak said.
He said that Clean Margao will start dry waste collection in the Comba area of the city from January 26, before the group descends at Aquem as part of the beautification exercise.

GFDO demand detailed probe into Fr Bismark's death

MARGAO: The Goans for Dabolim Only (GFDO) has demanded a thorough probe into the death of social activist Fr Bismark Dias.
In a statement, GFDO Convenor Fr Eremito Rebello said the government should sincerely conduct a thorough probe into Bismark’s death and bring the truth before the people. “Thorough investigation is required in the case since Bismark was a social activist and foul play cannot be ruled out”, Fr Rebello said.
Meanwhile, the Goans for Goa has strongly suspected that the death of Bismark Dias is a premeditated murder and has called for a CBI inquiry.

Rape registered against MP native

MARGAO: The Cuncolim police has registered a case of rape against a native of Madhya Pradesh, working in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, for allegedly having forcible sexual intercourse with a girl.
The police have acted on a complaint lodged by the mother of the girl, stating that her daughter is now seven month pregnant after the accused had forcible sexual intercourse.
She stated in her complaint that the incident of forcible sexual inter course in the rented room under the false pretext of marrying her daughter.
The police are on the look out of the accused Ajbabber Manjhi. Further investigations are on.

V M Salgaonkar Institute's clearance hits a roadblock

MARGAO: The Town and Country Planning department has told the Vishwa Saraswati Society running the V M Salgaonkar Institute of Hotel Management that its application seeking technical clearance for regularization of compound wall could not be considered without issues being sorted out.
“It appears that the issue regarding disposal of surface runoff from the drains towards the field remain unresolved. The villagers have brought to the notice that there are continuous flow of water through the weep holes of the retaining wall to the field, affecting the farmers. As such, you are once again directed to sort out the issue on priority basis by providing rechargeable pits and permeable trenches, wherever required so as to retard the runoff water from the property to the fields”, stated Town Planner R M Borkar in his letter to the Hotel Management institute.
Local residents let by Anthony Fernandes had urged the TCP not to approve the revised plan of compound wall since Raia locals and farmers have certain issues regarding the development carried out in the property.

Fiplees owner found dead

MARGAO: Owner of Fiplees, Salvador Pereira alias Salu (45) was found dead in his bedroom at his residence at Benaulim on Saturday morning.
Colva police station in-charge, PI Braz Menezes said the exact cause of death will be known on Sunday when the post mortem examination is conducted at Hospicio, though preliminary inquiries has ruled out foul play behind the death.
PI Menezes said that no injuries has been found on the body of the deceased and that he was sleeping inside with the door locked from inside. “It has come to light that the family members opened the bedroom at around 11.30 am on Saturday since there was no response from the deceased who was sleeping inside”, PI Menezes, adding that the police has preserved the body at the Hospicio for post mortem examination.
On the cause of death, PI Menezes said the exact cause behind Salvador’s death will be known after the post mortem examination scheduled on Sunday.
