A distance of almost 1 km along the NH17 at Guirim, Mapusa has become accident prone due to depression on the side of the road from Mapusa to Panaji.
The worst affected have been two-wheeler riders who fail to notice the depression when the road gets flooded with rain water.
“At least seven two-wheeler riders had a fall in the area on Friday night during a heavy shower and suffered injuries, some seriously,” said Sachin Kaskar, who resides near the area. “Two days earlier four others met with an accident in the same area during the day time,” he added.
Feeling sorry for the unsuspecting two-wheeler riders, on Sunday evening,
Kaskar along with his cousin took the onus on themselves and planted some trees along the stretch with an intention to warn unsuspecting riders.
“Almost every day we have been watching people having a fall in the area. We have planted these trees only to warn riders using the road,” he said.
Sources said water resources department had recently dug up the road to lay a water pipeline along the route from Guirim to Porvorim. After digging the road the WRD department failed to repair the road properly leading to the sinking of the road. An official of the NH (PWD) who was unaware of the condition of the road told The Goan that WRD had taken NOC from them to lay the water pipeline.
“We have not done any repair of the road. We had issued an NOC to WRD to lay a water pipeline along the route. The repair of the road was also done by them,” the official said.
“Thanks for informing us. We will inspect the road tomorrow,” the official assured this daily.
