Agitated Gandhi market vegetable and readymade garment vendors on Thursday gheraoed Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer
Agnelo Fernandes over his failure to crack a whip against the illegal roadside vendors along the station road, comunidade building, Sadekar lane and other areas around the municipal markets.
Led by Association President, Rajendra Azgaonkar, the vendors questioned the Chief Officer over his failure to honour his promise to initiate action against the vendors within 15 days.
The vendors drew attention of the Chief Officer that illegal vendors continue to have a field day around the Municipal markets despite his promise to act against the illegal hawkers and
vendors.
When the Chief Officer pointed out that he and the Municipal workers were preoccupied with other engagements, the vendors pointed out internal issues facing the civic body is not at all a justification for the Municipality for not acting against the illegal vendors.
The Chief Officer later promised the vendors that the Municipality would initiate action against the illegal vendors at the station road, Sadekar lane, comunidade building from the first week of November. The vendors, however, warned that they would lay a siege at the Margao Municipal Council in the future if the Chief Officer fails to address their issue as per the set deadline.
After the meeting, Azgaonkar said they had wanted for sometime to allow the Chief Officer to act against the illegal vendors, but in vain.
"We have gheraoed the Chief Officer since no action was forthcoming from the Municipality against the illegal vendors. We have warned the Chief Officer that vendors would lay a siege of the Municipality till action is initiated against the illegal vendors at the designated places," Azgaonkar added.
