WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar has announced plans to commence repair work on the Tillari canal in Siolim-Sodiem by November, aiming to address the persistent issue of flooding that has plagued the area during monsoon seasons.
Shirodkar assured compensation for homeowners affected by recent flooding incidents caused by canal overflow, outlining a comprehensive strategy to prevent future occurrences.
“We have devised a plan to implement a lasting solution to the flooding problem in Siolim-Sodiem. Starting from November, we will undertake repairs including lining the canal and installing new pipelines,” Shirodkar stated.
The minister’s assurance came in response to concerns raised by local MLA Delilah Lobo during the Legislative Assembly session regarding recurrent flooding in Siolim-Sodiem village due to overflow from the Tillari Irrigation canal.
Lobo highlighted the annual release of water through the canal during the monsoon period, exacerbated by heavy rains in Goa, leading to widespread inundation in Pilimbi Waddo and adjacent areas of Sodiem village.
“Nearly every year, households in Sodiem village endure flooding, with water levels often reaching waist height, affecting several homes,” Lobo explained, stressing the urgent need for a permanent solution to prevent such disruptions.
In addition to repairing the canal, Shirodkar emphasised the importance of compensation for affected homeowners and vowed to implement measures that would mitigate future flooding risks effectively.
The announcement sparked discussions among legislators, who underscored the necessity of timely action to safeguard communities against natural calamities.
