Pointing out that it is widely prevalent and used in literature, theater (tiatr) as well as films, Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Velim MLA, Cruz Silva raised the demand for official status to Konkani in the Roman script.
Speaking during the general discussion on the State budget in the Goa legislative assembly on Tuesday, Silva said, there was need for Konkani protagonists to join hands for the progress of the language instead of falling prey to the divide on the basis of script.
“Those demanding official status to Romi Konkani have nothing against the language written in other scripts,” Silva said adding that Goa’s official language is written in multiple scripts across the Konkan region of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra even up to Kochi in Kerala.
Silva said, Romi Konkani is widely used as a medium in the popular ‘Tiatr’ and also for religious literature which is centuries old by the Roman Catholic population of the State.
Later Silva and his party colleague, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, held a press conference in the Opposition Lobby where the former disclosed that he has also moved a private member’s resolution voicing the demand.
“I have introduced a special resolution demanding the status of official language to Konkani written in the Roman script,” Silva said.
