Chairperson reportedly does not want ugly nail marks on walls

Six months after shifting to the newly-renovated building at Altinho, Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has failed to erect a public notice board in its premises.

"Any public office has to make an arrangement of a notice board at its premises, so that public-related matters can be displayed on the board for people to read," a senior government official in the know informed The Goan.

But from the time the municipality shifted to the new premises, those at the helm failed to enforce the basic necessity in the premises.

“I admit my mistake. I should have made arrangement of fixing a notice board in the municipality,” said MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari, sounding very apologetic.

“I have no inhibition in admitting when I am wrong. I thank you for bringing it to my attention,” he added.

But was the chairperson unaware of the need to fix a notice board in a public office? Did none of the municipal staff bring it to his attention? What about the former and the present chief officers? Were they too not aware of the necessity?

Sources in the municipality have told The Goan that the chairperson was informed about the need to fix a notice board, but he was reportedly delaying it because he did not want to spoil the new walls with marks of nails.

“If he was so concerned about the aesthetics of the building, then he should have made arrangement of making an in-built notice board hooked on stands,” said the senior government officer.

A plastic sheet on the porch of the new building gives an indication that it is, but MMC Chairperson, Sandeep Falari sought to clear the doubts.

On Thursday, the chairperson said that rainwater that accumulates on the porch of the building gets washed out through the outlets but instead of falling straight to the ground, it drags on the ceiling below and spoils the false ceiling below that.

“There’s no leakage. We have put the plastic only to prevent the water from spreading to the ceiling below. Once the monsoon season ends, we will try to find a solution to the problem,” Falari said.

It may be recalled that the new Mapusa Municipal Council building was renovated at a whopping cost of Rs 1.8 crore.

Sources in the know said with new fittings and additional changes made in the building, the cost must have doubled and gone up to Rs 5 crore.
