The miscreants are believed to have taken advantage of the absence of the inmates of the six apartments before committing the burglary They broke open the main doors of the six quarters to enter inside before ransacking the cupboards for the valuables.
One Veerappa Angadi said the burglars managed to decamp with cash of Rs 2.30 lakh, besides some gold ornaments, all valued over Rs three lakh. The family had locked the door and headed for their native home when the burglars struck their residential quarter. Their son, who returned home after dropping the parents, saw a person sitting outside and they tried to assault him with stones before making good their escape.
Santosh Sattarkar told The Goan that the burglars managed to lift away two gold bangles, three pairs of earrings, besides cash of Rs 5000 from his residential quarter. He said he and his family had gone out on Tuesday and have returned home today after hearing the news.
Another resident, Natalina Fernandes, who had headed to her native village Canacona on Wednesday, said the burglars decamped with a pair of gold earring, besides cash of Rs 2000 from her quarter.
The incident sent shock waves within and outside the electricity staff quarter complex, with residents demanding that the police intensify patrolling in the locality to keep the burglars at bay.
