Social distancing crumbles at GMC job 'mela'

The heart of Goa’s fight against Covid-19, Goa Medical College and Hospital complex in Bambolim on Monday witnessed horrific violation of social distancing norms owing to the interviews scheduled for 85 posts of Multi Tasking Staff.

Hundreds of applicants crowded the area outside the Examination Hall in GMC complex in the hope of bagging the contract-basis vacancies advertised recently by the state government for a period of six months. The posts are extendable for a period of six months with a consolidated remuneration of Rs 17,780.

Several people took to social media platforms to share shocking images of milling crowds large rough to rival those which continue to gather in Goa’s marketplaces, except this time it was at the state’s premier medical institution. Questions were raised on the ability of the Health Department to plan its own administrative processes in accordance with the safety norms during the ongoing pandemic. The Health Minister and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant came under heavy criticism from the citizenry for risking the lives of hundreds of families due to internal mismanagement.

Goa Congress vehemently attacked the state BJP government as images began to surface from GMC. Taking to Twitter to slam the BJP government, Goa Congress president Girish Chodankar wrote, "The defective @BJP4Goa @GovtofGoa under @DrPramodPSawant puts thousands of young lives under #Covid risk by calling them all together for an interview at @GoaGmc for the Multitasking Vacancies. Shame on Health Minister @visrane. #InsensitiveBJP."

Congress leader Amaranth Panjikar also posted several images of the crowd at GMC and tweeted, "This is how @BJP4Goa  is taking precautions from #COVID19. On the very next day of two Doctors of GMC got re-infected with #COVID19, @DrPramodPSawant & @visrane calls thousands of young candidates for Multitasking Interviews at GMC. Luring young lives during Pandemic! @INCGoa"
