MARGAO
Friday’s fire incident at Sonsodo has exposed the Margao Municipality hollow as the fire personnel had to encounter mounds of waste dumped outside the Sonsodo waste treatment plant while they were involved in the fire-fighting operation.
Fire personnel pointed out that tonnes of wet waste was lying outside the imposing shed outside the waste treatment plant, indicating that the waste was being dumped outside with the plant reaching a point of saturation.
In fact, Fire Officer Gill D’Sa said the fire fighters cut off the main shed from the raging flames to ensure that the fire did not engulf the Sonsodo plant shed.
“When we reached the site and started the fire-fighting operation, we came across mounds of waste dumped outside the plant engulfed by fire. We effectively cut of the shed from the raging fire and stopped the fire from spreading to the shed,” Gill said, adding that it would have taken days to extinguish the fire if the fire had to spread to the shed wherein thousands of tonnes of garbage is piled up.
