Citizens will soon have to pay for parking in new areas, including the main road, around the Mapusa market.
The Mapusa Municipal Council has decided to make the main road and three other areas around the Mapusa market into pay parking with the twin objective to instill traffic discipline among road users and to garner revenue for the council.
Four key areas around the market square “ Aram soda lane opposite the taxi-stand, main market road from Union Pharmacy to old Asilo hospital, ‘chanekar’ line and the North zone education office “ will soon become pay parking.
The pay parking will be both for two-wheelers and four-wheelers.
Incidentally, parking takes place on both sides of the road along the North zone education office.
“The road near the educational zonal office is a very key link. Since vehicles are parked on both sides of the road we have decided to make pay parking for 15 days on one side of the road,” said Shubhangi Vaigankar, Chairperson of Mapusa.
Haphazard parking has been a big headache in Mapusa and to bring some order in town several councilors suggested that all the internal roads and by-lanes should be converted into pay parking in one go.
“I don’t understand why the council is carrying out this piecemeal pay parking. All the internal roads around the market area should also be converted into pay parking. Secondly, parking should be allowed only on one side,” said Shashank Narvekar, councilor of ward 5.
“Now, with main roads made into pay parking, people will park their vehicles on internal roads creating more traffic chaos,” he added.
He pointed out that two key roads “ near Remanso hospital and the old Mapusa Clinic hospital “ always witness traffic jams due to parking carried out on both sides of the road.
“We welcome the decision to introduce additional areas into pay parking but the best situation will be to make all roads including the by-lanes into pay parking,” he said.
Councilor Sainath Raul was of the opinion that uniform pay parking should be carried out in Mapusa without favouring anyone.
“We should not come under pressure on account of some influential persons to leave one particular area or road from pay parking,” Raul said.
Councilor of ward 9, Kayle Braganza also said that most of the internal roads in her ward have been notified as one way and therefore the civic body should look into the possibility of converting them into pay parking.
