GSPCB considering nano oxidation tech to clean water bodies

In its attempt to clean up the St Inez creek and several other effluent-affected water bodies in the State, the Goa State Pollution Control Board is considering a new method -- advanced nano oxidation technology.
The technology, being offered by Ozo Nano Sciences, a Bangalore based firm, promises to treat any kind of water for all pollutants and is currently being tested for its efficacy by the GSPCB. The results are awaited.According to A C Srinivas, the technology uses a method of chemical treatment of the water intended for oxidation of organic, inorganic and heavy metal pollutants in waste water, that leaves the water completely safe and drinkable at the end of its cycle through a mid-sized tank. This technology is a step ahead of regular advanced oxidation processes.   
“The advanced nano oxidation process is better because it helps deal with contaminants that have evolved to be resistant to biological processes. It uses oxidation at a nano scale that rids the water of both chemical pollutants as well as harmful bacteria and other micro-organisms,” he said speaking from Bangalore.

meet discharge standards. Treated waste water is ready for discharge within a short time leaving the treatment plant dry,” he added.Nano formulation uses environmental friendly oxidizers to oxidize and destroy viruses, bacteria, yeast, algae beyond reproduction levels.
“Environmental friendly oxidizers mean oxidizers that convert into safe oxygen and hydrogen when the oxidation occurs,” he said.   
The GSPCB has drawn several samples of contaminated water from various sites across Goa to test the efficacy of the method and its usefulness in Goa.   
“Depending on the results, we can recommend to the government the use of this method for various sites in Goa,” GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha told The Goan.   
The results of the experiment are expected by this weekend.
