South Western Railway (SWR) has achieved a historic milestone by recording its highest-ever originating freight loading for the month of May, reflecting strong growth in industrial and commercial transportation across Karnataka and neighbouring regions, including Goa.

According to SWR officials, the railway zone registered freight loading of 4.40 million tonnes (MT) in May 2026, compared to 4.22 MT during May 2025, marking a growth of 4.3 per cent. The performance surpassed the previous May record of 4.25 MT achieved in 2008.

During the month, SWR loaded an average of 2,275 wagons daily, compared to 2,193 wagons in the corresponding period last year.

The record freight movement, according to SWR sources, assumes significance for Goa, as a major portion of industrial raw materials and finished goods movement between Karnataka, Goa and other parts of the country depends on efficient rail connectivity.

The Konkan and South Western Railway networks play a crucial role in supporting the transportation requirements of Goa’s mining, manufacturing, infrastructure and logistics sectors.

Commodity-wise, SWR handled 1.766 MT of iron ore, 0.921 MT of steel and 0.108 MT of RMSP during May. Coal loading witnessed a major jump, reaching 0.93 MT compared to 0.76 MT last year, registering a growth of 23.3 per cent. Container traffic also improved significantly, rising from 0.07 MT to 0.09 MT, a growth of 16.9 per cent. Loading of Balance Other Goods increased sharply by 56.3 per cent.

The growth in freight movement is expected to benefit industries in Goa and Mormugao Port, which rely on regular supply chains for raw materials, machinery and commercial goods. Improved rail capacity also provides an alternative to road transport, helping to reduce logistics pressure and improve connectivity for businesses.

SWR also recorded a strong financial performance during May 2026, earning gross revenue of Rs 770.71 crore. Passenger earnings contributed Rs 302.34 crore, showing a 21.37 per cent rise over last year. Passenger numbers increased to 16.36 million, reflecting continued demand for rail services.

Freight earnings stood at Rs 425.67 crore, while parcel and other coaching revenues also contributed to overall growth. For the financial year up to May 2026, SWR’s total gross revenue reached Rs 1,481.46 crore.
